Challenge re-boot

Okay, technically this is NOT a new one - it's just a fresh start on one I've already joined. The Book Awards Challenge II has ended (and I failed, reading only 4 books), and the Book Awards Challenge 3 has begun!

Here are the rules:

  1. Read 5 books from 5 different awards during July 1, 2009 through December 1, 2009.

  2. Overlaps with other challenges are permitted.

  3. Choices don't have to be posted right away, and lists may be changed at any time.

  4. 'Award winners' is loosely defined; make the challenge fit your needs.

Luckily, I already have a list - the books I planned to read for the last one but didn't. Here it is:

Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson (Arthur C. Clarke)
An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro (Costa/Whitbread)
The In-Between World of Vikram Lal by M.G. Vassanji (Giller)
Mercy Among the Children by David Adams Richards (Giller)
The Tin Flute by Gabrielle Roy (Governor General)
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (Hugo)
This Blinding Absence of Light by Taher Ben Jelloun (IMPAC Dublin)
Sacred Country by Rose Tremain (James Tait Black)
The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai (NBCC)
Atonement by Ian McEwan (NBCC)
Doomsday Book by Connie Willis (Hugo and Nebula)
Half of a Yellow Sun by Adichie (Orange)

Skellig by David Almond
(British Whitbread award for Children's Literature) finished 6/14/09, rated 9/10.
A Good House by Bonnie Burnard
(Giller Prize) finished 7/4/09, rated 7/10
The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon (Nebula) finished 7/5/09, rated 10/10
Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (Hugo) finished 9/7/09, rated 8/10

I only have to read 5 of these before the year is over - seems doable, right??

***edited to remove The Known World by Edward Jones - I just TRIED to read this one last week, and it wasn't working for me. I'm certainly not going to keep it hanging around on this list!***

I failed this one too! I have been contemplating joining again considering I'm planning on reading several of my listed books soon anyway, but I think I won't. I don't like failing! LOL.

Half of a Yellow Sun is a good one, as is Artist of the Floating World. I wasn't too fond of The Known World, though.

I failed at the Book Awards Challenge II and have kind of decided I'm not cut out for challenges.

I really like this idea, but a few of those books are real monsters. I can understand why you didn't finish.
